Digital Harbor High School was founded in 2002, from the existing Southern High School building that underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to support high-tech programs. It is a school of choice: students are chosen by lottery from communities across Baltimore City. This means that any student who wins the lottery may attend, regardless of distance needed to travel. The mission of Digital Harbor is to prepare students for college, careers in technology, and responsible citizenship. Currently, there are approximately 1300 students in 9th through 12th grade. The number of students has been growing yearly. Class sizes range 20-30 depending on the course. There is a significantly higher number of male students to female students (792:462). The school is primarily African American at 74%, although there is a wider range of other races than at other schools. Caucasian is at 17%, Hispanic is at 8%, and Asian/Pacific Islander is at 1%. We are seeing an increase of English Language Learners as this year has progressed. We started at 4% and are rising to 5-6% by the end of this school year. Students who receive Free and Reduced Lunch is quite high at 78%, which is also rising per year. Special Education students are at 19% for 2013. Student mobility is high at 28.1%, although the entrants and withdrawals are nearly equal.
