Digital Harbor High School was awarded the 2015-2016 Green, Healthy Smart Challenge Grant!!!
Welcome
We have applied for a grant as a "Green School"
Digital Harbor High School (416) is a city-wide high school in the Federal Hill neighborhood. A school of choice, students are chosen by lottery from communities across Baltimore City. The mission of Digital Harbor is to prepare students for college, careers in technology and responsible citizenship. The population of almost 1,500 students is 74% African American, 12% Hispanic, 11% white, and 2% other ethnicities.
Digital Harbor is located within walking distance of several parks: Federal Hill, Riverside, Latrobe, Fort McHenry and Swann parks. Several of the athletic terams utilize these parks for team sports, and the school's environmental club- Baltimore Inner City Outings, regularly hikes or bikes in these parks as well as utilizing the surrounding waterways for sailing club and boating with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Digital Harbor High School science department has been in partnership with Patterson Park Audobon since 2002, and participates annually in Audobon Watershed Experience (AWE). AWE designed to connect students in a tangible way to their place in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed through meaningful experiences reinforced by comprehensive in-class activities. Through fishing, seining and bird watching, students connect with their watershed and learn to value the environment. Each year, after returning from the watershed experience, DHHS students identify a way they can give back to the community.
Digital Harbor has a bike club which was started in 2013. Since then it has expanded to a club which teaches students who to rebuild, repair and safely ride bicycles in the city. Students who earn enough hours in the garage are given a bike to ride to school. This promotes responsible and environmentally-sound transportation.
Last year DHHS received a grant to increase sustainability at the school and have a water source for the school garden. There is now a large pergola covered area for visitors and benches in the garden. There is now also a water source for the garden. The grant also covered tools and parts for responsible bicycle riding as well as a new bike rack, which is to be installed at DHHS this fall.
** Note: The leftover funds from last year's grant are to be used to purchase and install bike racks at DHHS. We are currently still awaiting final approval from administration before completing this purchase. We have new administration this year. We will keep you updated on our progress. **
Ze'Vion, Joseph, Nicholas, Pedro, and Der'Reyis are students from the 9th-12th grades who are part of the bike club at Digital Harbor High School. The bike club was formed during the 2012-2013 school year, although the Green Team was just formed in 2015. The group meets every Wednesday from 3-5:30 p.m. for bike club at Digital Harbor High School, a group that encourages sustainability and green transportation by providing students with bicycles to ride to school (bicycles the students themselves rebuild and repair). Students also learn how to rebuild, repair and safely ride their bicycles on the city roads. Students also need helmets and lights for their bicycles so they can safely ride to and from school.
Students will use the funds to repair, rebuild, and safely ride bicycles to and from school as well as during bike club. Funds will cover all parts and tools needed to repair and rebuild bicycles as well as cover supplies for safe riding (helmets, locks, etc). Funds will also cover overnight camping/hiking/biking trips sponsored by bike club.
